Nuns of Khachoe Ghakyil
Women's Freedom and Spiritual Liberation:
2000 European Tour
A letter from Lama Zopa Rinpoche
Spiritual head of the FPMT

Would you like to invite the Kopan nuns
to chant, debate and make sand mandalas?

The nuns of Khachoe Ghakyil Nunnery – Kopan’s sister monastery in the Kathmandu valley – will tour the USA and Canada to make sand mandalas, chant, debate and so forth. The purpose of the tour is to support the nunnery so that nuns and women can make their lives more beneficial and productive for themselves and others.

The nunnery started in 1979 with one nun, then two nuns who came from Tibet, gradually increasing, starting with relatives from Tibet. Now there are 200 nuns, with new ones coming all the time.  Facilities, accommodation and so forth for at least 100 more nuns are needed.

Ven. Lama Zopa Rinpoche Due to the kindness of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Lama Yeshe, the Khachoe Ghakyil nuns have the incredible opportunity to study the extensive teachings of Buddha’s sutra and tantra, exactly as the monks of Kopan Monastery, including philosophy, meditation, traditional rituals, chanting and art. It was difficult for them to do any of this in Tibet. The nuns also study Tibetan and English, mathematics (especially calculus – joking!), therefore giving them the great opportunity to develop the mind to enlightenment and to become qualified women teachers in the world.
Also, on the basis of understanding the lam-rim, the nuns do the nine preliminary practices, 100 Nyung-nays, and after that the three-year retreat of Vajra Yogini, which is one of the highest practices of the four tantras. This is the goal of their life.

I am very happy with the clear plan of their lives. They have been studying so well with good discipline. So many nuns come from Tibet and the other Himalayan regions to take the opportunity to practice the unmistaken, undeceiving, most precious path to enlightenment.

Ven. Tsenla, who built the nunnery and was its first director, will travel with them to guide and introduce them to the people of America.

This letter from Rinpoche was printed in Mandala Magazine
(Jan-Feb 99), the newsmagazine of the FPMT
